Allied military jets to conduct flyovers of four Estonian cities on Thursday
Military jets from Estonia and three NATO allies participating in the annual Spring Storm military exercise will perform a demonstration flight over four Estonian cities on Thursday.
Two Estonian Air Force L-39 Albatros fighter jets, two US Air Force (USAF) F-15 Eagle fighter jets, two Polish Sukhoi Su-22 Fitter fighter-bombers, and two Royal Air Force (RAF) Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets are scheduled to fly over the Southern Estonian city of Tartu at midday on Thursday, May 12.
Approximately fifteen minutes later, the eight jets will perform a low flyover over Taara Army Base in the Southeastern city of Võru. The Estonian and RAF jets will thereafter remain at the base, while the US and Polish jets continue on to fly over the Western city of Pärnu and the capital city of Tallinn before returning to Ämari Air Base in Harju County.
The flyovers will be conducted at approximately 1,000 feet, or 300 meters; lower altitudes are permitted only over Taara Army Base in Võru.
The Estonian Air Force’s L-39 trainer jets are dedicated first and foremost for the training and development of pilots and forward air controllers.
The Polish Air Force’s variable-sweep wing Sukhoi Su-22 bombers are of Soviet origin but have been extensively updated for greater interoperability with other NATO aircraft. This type of aircraft is used primarily for the aerial attack of ground targets.
The fourth-generation F-15C fighter jets in use by the USAF are counted among the most successful modern fighters, with over 100 victories and no losses in aerial combat to date.
The RAF’s Eurofighter Typhoon jets, among the world’s most modern military aircraft, are twin-engine multirole combat fighters also capable of air-to-air and air-to-ground combat as well as observation and reconnaissance work.
