Marju Himma named editor-in-chief of ERR’s new online portals unit
Journalist and journalism professor Marju Himma has been confirmed as the editor-in-chief of the Estonian Broadcasting Service’s (ERR) new online portals unit. Himma’s responsibilities will include oversight of ERR’s science, culture and entertainment sections as well its multimedia team.
”Plans include significantly expanding ERR’s production of content that maximizes on the properties of the web while also taking care to make sure that ERR’s themed portals publish trustworthy and high-quality journalistic material,” explained Himma. “The creation of totally new themed portals cannot be ruled out either.”
Marju Himma has worked as a journalist for Tartu Postimees as well as ERR. In addition, Himma has also given classes in practical journalism to journalism majors at the University of Tartu since 2008.
Himma defended her Master’s thesis on the subject of changing genres in journalism, and is currently working on a PhD thesis on the effects of online journalism on Estonia’s journalism culture.
At ERR, Himma has also been responsible for the online science section Novaator as well as the general online news.
Following a June 1 restructuring, ERR’s online news portal was administratively divided in two, with its Estonian-, Russian- and English-language news portals being placed under the direction of the Estonian Broadcasting Service’s editorial board; Anvar Samost was named editor-in-chief of ERR’s online news portals. ERR’s science, culture and entertainment sections as well as its newly formed multimedia team were joined together to form the ERR portals unit, to which the news site’s opinions section belongs now as well.
ERR’s online portals’ previous Editor-in-Chief Rain Kooli stepped down from his position voluntarily; he continues to work for ERR as an opinion editor.
