Estonia welcomes association agreements with Georgia and Moldova
Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand (independent) said on Friday that Estonia welcomed the fact that the European Union’s association agreements with Georgia and Moldova entered into effect.
“It is a very important day in the relations between the European Union, Georgia and Moldova that will strengthen the close cooperation, which has reached a new level,” Kaljurand was quoted by spokespeople as saying.
Speaking about the association agreements on Thursday, the minister said that these would help Georgia and Moldova strengthen political and economic integration with the European Union and gradually help eastern partners gain access to the EU’s domestic market.
“The harmonization of legislation with EU standards will improve the business and investment climate of partnership countries, and the agreements will help them promote the rule of law, human rights, and democracy, in addition to the free market economy,” Kaljurand said.
Kaljurand confirmed that Georgia and Moldova would become Estonia’s development cooperation priority countries, and that Estonia would help them implement the association agreements in any way it could.
The Estonian government approved the association agreements on Jun. 19. They were signed in Brussels on Jun. 27.
