20 murders, manslaughters registered in first half of 2016
In the first half of 2016, a total of 20 murders and manslaughters were committed in Estonia, it appears from preliminary figures released by the Ministry of Justice.
The number stood at 12 after five months, but increased significantly during the month of June. In the first half of last year, by comparison, a total of 21 murders and manslaughters were registered. Crime statistics include cases of attempted homicide.
In 2015, a total of 40 people lost their lives as a result of murder or manslaughter, which marks an all-time low — attempts included, the year saw 38 cases of manslaughter or attempted manslaughter, and 12 cases of murder or attempted murder.
In comparison, in 2005, ten years prior, 137 cases of manslaughter or attempted manslaughter and 19 cases of murder or attempted murder were registered across Estonia, with a total of 123 lives lost.
