Rõivas: Close relationship between Estonia, UK will continue
Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas congratulated Theresa May on assuming office as the new prime minister of the UK on Thursday, and stated that the strong relationship between Estonia and the UK would continue.
"The UK will be an important partner for Estonia and an ally in both the economic and security spheres in the future as well," said Rõivas in a press release. "This is affirmed, among other things, by the fact that a NATO multinational battalion under their leadership will be stationed in Estonia soon. I wish Theresa May success in her role as prime minister and hope to meet her soon."
Rõivas also expressed hope that the new British government taking office would provide an opportunity to move forward with several other issues that were important from Estonia and the EU's point of view.
Estonia is waiting on the UK's decision regarding their EU presidency, which, according to the existing schedule, would immediately precede Estonia's presidency, the latter of which is scheduled for the first half of 2018. Estonian officials have noted that clarity would be needed as soon as possible for the successful organization of the presidency.
