Estonian government in favor of implementing 5-kilometer border zone
On Thursday the Estonian government gave its support in principle to the bill introduced by the Constitutional Committee of the Riigikogu for the implementation of a 5-kilometer, or approximately 3-mile, border zone along its external border.
The proposed border zone will be implemented for the guarding and protection of Estonia's external land border as well as for the ensuring of the border regime. The border zone will consist of a five-kilometer-wide (3.1-mile) inland zone running parallel to the border strip.
Police will be granted the right to move unhindered by foot or by vehicle as well as restrict the presence and movement of people within the border zone. Guarding of the external border or activities disturbing the border peace within the border zone or on any transboundary bodies of water must likewise be approved by the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA).
The bill also provides for the basis upon which to limit the flying of unmanned aircraft near the country's external border if it impedes upon the guarding of Estonia's state border or disturbs the border peace.
