Estonians in Rio, Day 13: Estonian record broken in hurdles final, wrestler bested by eventual bronze, decathletes wrap up ({{commentsTotal}})

Despite coming in 6th place, Estonian hurdle jumper Rasmus Mägi broke the Estonian record in the 400m hurdles final, while a promising 3:0 start still gave way to a 4:6 defeat for wrestler Epp Mäe and decathletes Karl Robert Saluri and Maicel Uibo finished 23rd and 24th after two days of competition.

Athletics: Men's 400m hurdles

While in the first round he came just one hundredth of a second short of tying the standing Estonian record, set himself in 2014, with a time of 48.55 seconds, Estonian hurdle jumper Rasmus Mägi set a new one with a time of 48.40 seconds in the 400m hurdles final, placing 6th overall.

The final began with a false start by Puerto Rican Javier Culson, who was thereafter disqualified. The second start went off without a hitch, however Mägi quickly fell into last place. The Estonian hurdle jumper managed to advance one place on the home stretch, however, and ended up finishing in 6th place.

The gold went to American Kerron Clement with a time of 47.73, silver to Kenyan Boniface Mucheru Tumuti with a time of 47.78, and bronze to Yasmani Copello of Turkey with a time of 47.92.

Wrestling: Women's freestyle 75 kg

Despite an initial lead of 3:0 over her opponent, Estonian wrestler Epp Mäe was eventually bested 6:4 during the final minute against Chinese opponent Zhang Fengliu, who went on to win the bronze medal 3:1 againt Belarusian Vasilisa Marzaliuk.

"In the beginning I was active, however I slept on [my opponent's] attack," Mäe told ETV after the match. "The final minute went by unbelievably quickly."

While Zhang was the 2013 World Champion, Mäe said she only found out about a month ago that she would be representing China. "Therefore I was unaccustomed to wrestling against her," explained the Estonian wrestler.

The event's gold and silver went to Canadian Erica Wiebe and Kazakh Guzel Manyurova, respectively, after a 3:0 gold medal match in the Canadian's favor.
