Speakers of parliament of Nordic and Baltic countries to meet in Riga
Riga will host this year’s conference of the speakers of parliament of the Baltic and Nordic countries next Monday, Aug. 22, the press service of the Latvian parliament announced. For Estonia, President of the Riigikogu Eiki Nestor (SDE) will participate.
The speakers of the Latvian, Lithuanian, Estonian, Danish, Finnish, Icelandic, Norwegian, and Swedish parliaments will gather in the Latvian capital to discuss issues concerning regional cooperation.
The agenda of the meeting will focus on the topics that the eight countries have set out as their cooperation priorities. These include strengthening security in the region and supporting the Eastern Partnership of the European Union. This year, the rotating task of coordinating the common efforts of the NB8 is carried out by Latvia.
In the context of regional security, the speakers of parliament of the NB8 countries will discuss strengthening energy security, cybersecurity, combatting hybrid threats, and progress in the field of strategic communication.
On the subject of continued support for Eastern Partnership countries, discussions are to focus on the current situation in the region and the reform that these countries have achieved.
The speakers of parliament will also discuss other issues and challenges currently on the European agenda.
The NB8 have met and cooperated in this format successfully since the early 1990s. Their prime ministers, MPs, ministers, and other officials meet on a regular basis.
