Phone-based identification service now has more than 100,000 users ({{commentsTotal}})

The number of users of Estonia’s Mobiil-ID service has grown to more than 100,000. The service makes it possible to identify oneself by use of a mobile phone, and has been effective as an official state ID since 2011.

Mobiil-ID also made a big leap forward in 2015, when the number of its users grew by 40% and reached 75,000.

The service makes it possible to unmistakably identify the user of a mobile phone, or services connected to it. This has made mobile phone-based banking available, along with the possibility to sign documents digitally.

Last year, 2.7 million transactions a month were done by means of Mobiil-ID. Product director Katrin Aron of mobile network provider Tele2 predicts that this number will reach 5 million in 2016.
