Center Party leadership stumble upon €450,000 guarantee they knew nothing about
The leadership of the Center Party is set to meet on Monday to examine a letter of guarantee over €450,000 issued on behalf of the party by its former secretary general, Priit Toobal.
The letter of guarantee was found at the headquarters of the party two days ago, the online edition of Postimees reported. Jaanus Karilaid, deputy chairman of the party, told Postimees that the party definitely hadn’t issued the guarantee.
“The signature has been put under the letter of guarantee on behalf of the party, but it is very likely that the party leadership knew nothing about it,” he said.
Postimees has learned that the letter of guarantee was issued to cover €450,000. Karilaid confirmed that the sum indicated in the letter was of that magnitude. He also said that the obligation wasn’t due during the next year.
Karilaid said that the people who knew about the letter now were acting promptly and diligently. He added that they wanted to know as much as possible, why it was issued, whether or not the leadership had authorized it, and what the letter’s legal significance and impact on the party’s budget would be.
Yana Toom, another deputy chairperson of Center, said on social media that there was no point asking leadership members about the letter before the meeting had taken place. “What each of us thinks has no big significance — this is a matter we will discuss together, we will arrive at a conclusion together, and we will then inform the media about it,” Toom said.
The party’s present secretary general, Oudekki Loone, and former secretary general, Priit Toobal, were not available for comment.
