A technology switch is set to be completed in Estonia by next spring which will see the replacement of all of the approximately 15,000 landline telephone connections remaining in the country with voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) connections, reported Estonian daily Eesti Päevaleht.

As part of the switch, a wire connection will be replaced with a VoIP connection and the telephone linked to a router.

Statistics show landline phones as remaining an important means of communication in emergencies; currently one in ten emergency calls are still placed from landline telephones.

Oliver Galian, Director of the Technical Regulatory Authority's Communications and Media Services Department Oliver Galian stated that the switch to VoIP is a phenomenon taking place globally and that the Technical Regulatory Authority is not obliged to assess any risks it entails.
