Stay in town or leave Tallinn to discover the less well-known parts of the country, this week looks very promising. From an exhibition of daring architectural ideas to traditional music and contemporary art, Estonia has a lot to offer also this week.

Exhibition “Polar Space”
Sept. 23 to Oct. 6
Kukruse Polar Manor

The polar visions of architecture students of the Estonian Academy of Arts have reached Kukruse Polar Manor in Ida-Viru county. A science station located on the drifting sea ice of the Arctic Ocean, a small mobile science lab, a university building in Antarctica, the exhibition presents concepts and ideas beyond the reach of our latitudes. The exhibition is open until Oct. 6, 2016, and will move on to Kuressaare after that.

Fresh Music Festival Autumnfest 2016
Oct. 4-8
Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Tallinn

Traditionally, the festival brings together guests from near and far, this year starting with Udmurtia and ending with the USA. A new repertoire, reaching from Poland to Finland, electroacoustic music, works by young Estonian composers, French spectral music, new classics, symbiosis between free improvisation and ethno, masterclasses, and lectures are waiting for you.

Tallinn Comedy Festival
Oct. 5-7
Various locations across Tallinn

Headlining the festival is Stephen K Amos (UK), an international star and feel-good comedian. Also, the big festival gala is back, where ten acts have to perform their best material within a time limit. You’ll also find festival specials of Komeediklubi’s English-language comedy night as well as Fopaa at the events.

5th Artishok Biennale
Oct. 6-15
Theatre NO99, Tallinn

Artishok Biennale is an exhibition format established in 2008, combining the work of ten artists created for the biennale and ten critics writing about each of the works on display. Critics’ opinions are presented in the exhibition alongside the newly created artwork.

XIV Folk Music Harvest Party
Oct. 7-8
Estonian Traditional Music Centre, Viljandi

Popular folk singer Mari Kalkun has created a special project for this year’s harvest party, called “From the Bottom of the Soul”, where five charismatic female musicians make music together: Mari Kalkun, Siiri Sisask, Sänni Noormets, Tuulikki Bartosik and Aleksandra Kremenetski.

David Kennedy Cutler and Juntae Teejay Hwang at ARS Projektiruum
Oct. 8-30
ARS project space, Tallinn

Legendary New York gallery “Art in General” is visiting Tallinn. In collaboration with CCA, Estonia presents two solo exhibitions of newly commissioned work by Juntae Teejay Hwang and David Kennedy Cutler. Both exhibitions process urgent questions of identity politics in the digital era.

Concert series IMPROTEST: SCOTT L. MILLER, MART SOO/ Minneapolis – Tallinn
Oct. 5
Kanuti Gildi Saal, Tallinn

Scott L. Miller is known for his interactive electroacoustic chamber music, ecosystemic performance pieces, and use of the Kyma sound design environment in free improvisation. Mart Soo is a Tallinn-based guitarist, composer, and improviser. In addition to his guitar, he uses live electronics in the performance of his free improvisation, jazz, and minimalist music.

Swan Lake
Oct. 8
Estonian National Opera, Tallinn

As one of the quintessential ballets of all times, “Swan Lake” offers an unforgettable experience of romance, virtuoso dancing, and Tchaikovsky’s magnificent music. Choreographer and stage director of the new redaction is well-known choreographer Thomas Edur.

Ensemble Hortus Musicus “5777 years since the creation of the world”
Oct. 8
Gate Tower, Tallinn

Early music group Hortus Musicus create a quite different sense of being, at least for the evening of the concert.
