Sunday marked the beginning of a week during which 18 businesses in the Estonian food industry will be opening their doors and showing their kitchens to visitors.
Schoolchildren and food industry executives kicked off Food Industry Week by making sandwiches, a typical Estonian breakfast item, together at Leibur, Estonia's oldest bread manufacturer, reported ETV's nightly news broadcast "Aktuaalne kaamera."
Over the next seven days, 18 food industry businesses across the country will be welcoming visitors who will have the opportunity to find out how jam gets into candy and what is used to make holes in cheese.
The goal behind the weeklong event is to increase trust in domestically-produced food as well as interest in employment in the food industry, and interest in tours of the businesses has been so great that the industry plans to organize the event again next year.
"I really hope that this will become a tradition and I am convinced that next year there will be many times more plants and food manufacturers who will open their doors during the week," said Estonian Food Industry Association director Sirje Potisepp, adding that over 80 tours are scheduled and 1,600 visitors expected this week.
"Actually we have a lot of visitors and tours; it seems natural, and we have nothing to hide," said Leibur managing director Asso Lankots. "Naturally we can't welcome too many people due to various hygiene requirements, but we can handle this."
