MP Jüri Ratas to announce bid for chairmanship of Center Party ({{commentsTotal}})

Jüri Ratas, a member of the board of Estonia's opposition Center Party and Second Vice-President of the Riigikogu, is expected to announce his bid for the chairmanship on Wednesday, a Center Party board member who asked to remain anonymous said on Tuesday.

Ratas will run for chairman against longtime incumbent Edgar Savisaar at the extraordinary party congress scheduled to take place in early November, the party board member confirmed to BNS.

"Local elections are approaching and there is need for a strong leader who could engage Tallinn as well," said the board member, stating that Ratas meets those criteria. Neither Mailis Reps nor Kadri Simson, both suggested in the media as potential candidates for the party's top post, is suited for the job, the source added.

An extraordinary congress of Estonia's Center Party is slated to take place on Nov. 5. in the central Estonian town of Paide. The party's extended board will discuss the convocation of this congress on Saturday.
