Center Party Parliamentary Group Chairman Kadri Simson is working on getting the Conservative People’s Party of Estonia (EKRE) and Free Party to join the Center Party in its planned expression of no confidence against Estonia’s prime minister.

Simson had promised to initiate an expression of no confidence against Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas (Reform) for the Estonian government’s endorsement of Juhan Parts (IRL) for the Estonian seat in the European Court of Auditors (ECA).

The chairmen of both EKRE and the Free Party’s parliamentary groups confirmed to ERR that Simson had called them regarding this matter.

"There’s no secret here," said EKRE Parliamentary Group Chairman Martin Helme. "In our opinion the current government is detrimental to Estonia and it should be replaced one way or another either way."

He noted that Parts’ unsuitability for the position was "perfectly clear" to EKRE’s parliamentary group. "Not his qualifications — we have no doubts about that. But that which has happened during his tenure in his ministry’s area of government clearly disqualifies him," Helme explained.

He added that EKRE’s parliamentary group had not yet discussed joining the planned expression of no confidence against Rõivas, but he saw no reason why they shouldn’t.

Free Party Parliamentary Group Chairman Andres Herkel also said that it was entirely possible that the Free Party would join in on the expression of no confidence.

"We have submitted our own criticism regarding how the [endorsement] process went, and it doesn’t even have to do with Parts personally so much as how it seemed to be some kind of trade-off on the subject of the president," explained Herkel.

Simson said on Monday that the Center Party Parliamentary Group had promised a year ago to initiate an expression of no confidence against Prime Minister Taavi Rõivas if the government should decide to endorse Juhan Parts as the Estonian representative to the European Court of Auditors. According to Simson, this promise was still in effect.
