Ligi: Stable Europe with common values an achievement worth defending
Speaking about the future of Europe with Germany’s Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier at a meeting in Berlin on Thursday, Foreign Minister Jürgen Ligi (Reform) stressed the importance of unity and cooperation within the European Union.
Ligi said that the EU needed to be strong, united, and capable of development, a press release of the Estonian Foreign Ministry released on Thursday evening stated.
“A stable Europe with common values is a historic achievement that we must stand up for together,” Ligi said.
Ligi expressed appreciation for Germany’s efforts in the Normandy format and as chairman of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) in the attempt to end Russian aggression against Ukraine.
Ligi said that Estonia attached high value to good and intense relations with Germany, especially in matters of security and the economy.
“Germany’s efforts are valued very highly in Estonia. Germany participates very actively in Baltic air policing, and will do so also in the composition of allied forces in our region in the future,” Ligi said.
The ministers discussed the situation in Syria, the situation after the British referendum on leaving the EU, and preparations for the Estonian presidency of the EU next year.
