30,000 low income earner tax rebate applications submitted on first day
By Thursday morning, 248,504 taxpayers in Estonia had filed their tax returns for 2016, of which some 30,000 applied for a tax rebate known as the low income earner's support.
The amount of income tax to be returned on the basis of the low income earner's support applications already stood at €11 million. The final sum will be revealed in May after the Estonian Tax and Customs Board (MTA) has finished checking the tax returns and computed the refunds based on the submitted data, the tax authority said.
Tax returns must be filed this year by all those who wish to seek the low income earner's support that will be paid out for the first time in 2017. Employees who worked full-time for at least six months last year and whose gross wages for the year did not exceed €7,817 will be eligible for the refund.
In order to receive the rebate, an application must be filed with the MTA.
A total of approximately €43.5 million euros is due to be returned to taxpayers who had already filed their taxes as of Thursday morning, just over a day after the online tax return system opened for the season.
