Interior Minister nominates Kätlin Alvela to head emergency call center
Minister of the Interior Andres Anvelt will propose that the government confirm Kätlin Alvela, current director of a Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) bureau, director general of the Alarm Center, Estonia's emergency call center.
Alvela has earned a bachelor's degree in social work at the University of Tartu and a master's degree in political science from Tallinn University.
Since November 2004, she has worked in various positions within the PPA's West Prefecture, heading the PPA Development Department's Prevention and Offence Proceeding Bureau for the last two years.
Upon the proposal of the Minister of the Interior and following a review by the Legal Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu, the director general of the Alarm Center is appointed to a five-year term by the Estonian government.
Janek Laev, the center's current director general, took office on March 1, 2012; his term of office will expire on Feb. 28.
The Competition and Evaluation Committee of Higher State Public Servants at the State Chancellery held a competition in order to fill the position.
The Alarm Center receives all emergency calls at the emergency number 112 and coordinates the appropriate response between different authorities, like the police, the fire brigade, and ambulance centers.
