Why and Why Now?

Estonian Public Broadcasting in English? “Whose idea was it?” and “Why now?” are the two questions I’ve been most asked in the last week about our new website.

Concerning the first, I can only say a good idea has many fathers. Regarding the second—Why now, 19 years after independence, was it finally funded?—I could only speculate. (And therefore I won’t.)

What I can answer is Why. Because Estonia has no consistent, objective voice in a language not its own.

Some have taken issue with the use of “objective.” Estonians, perhaps rightly skeptical given their history, have asked (and no doubt will continue to ask) how anything government funded can be objective. “Are you not simply a propaganda machine and government mouthpiece?” I was asked by an Estonian friend. I had to admire his bluntness.

I answered him by saying that Estonian Public Broadcasting has been objective in its native language despite the fact it is government funded. He was not entirely pleased with that, and so I offered him the BBC. I mentioned, too, that we’d hired a team of journalists with experience on both sides of the Atlantic, who wouldn't stay long if the place weren’t independent. Skeptics are not easily satisfied, so I can only invite the reader to judge for himself.

Regarding the other burning question, What?, our mission at “News” (as we’re known in the Faehlmanni house) is to offer an English-language window to Estonia. We will offer translations supplemented with background and context for foreign readers, plus a fair helping of original content. And not only will we provide a picture of what is happening in Estonia to the abroad, but we’ll also serve as a platform for when Estonians wish to say something to more than just their fellow countrymen. And we hope to do both those things at the highest professional standard.

Will we succeed? Only the reader may judge. And I am sure you will.

I am looking forward to learning more about Estonia. We don't hear much about your country in the US, which I do not understand because of the historical significance and current relevance in world events. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said, "Because Estonia has no consistent, objective voice in a language not its own." At least in the English speaking media that is very true. Good luck in this endeavor. I'll be reading.

Dear Scott Diel, Thank you for realization of this good idea. I support this one! It is right - Estonia should present its news in English, in order everyone in Europe and the World could read, what happens in Estonia in reality, but do not hear only Russia talking about Estonia. Russia gives absolutely wrong information about Estonia in Europe, especially about Russians lived in Estonia (I do not understand - which rights of Russians are protected by Russia continuously?). Moreover other problems are presented from other side and Estonia voice is not heard in the World. I am personally interested to read your news in English. I feel you are professional in your business. Thank you so much. GOOD LUCK! Yours faithfully Estonian citizen, Russian by nationality

Unless, you are going to write about ACTUAL news, the site WILL be propaganda page for tourists. Where are the coverage of the recent storm for example? There are lots of relevant topics about that I would like to share with my friends abroad. The euro coverage has been done to death in many English news sites. Not many people care about some rather unknown estonian sportsmen. Or small ship builders. Get some real news on here and build a decent news portal, not some white-washed tourist info page. Otherwise, great and long awaited move. I hope it works out as it should. Good luck!

Dear Scott, I am very pleased to hear that now there will be an opportunity for people like me who live in Estonia but don't understand Estonian to get local news. I have been trying to use google translator on the local newspaper pages but it manages to loose the meaning. Also for people who want to simply get information about Estonian politics and culture this site will be very useful. I remember when I decided to move here , it was very tough to get an idea of the country from afar. My only request will be that the news not be filtered out of this page because it might not leave a good impression on the international reader. We need an honest portal which represents Estonia as it is.

Dear Scott and colleagues of Scott, congratulations and more power to you! This is something that Estonia should have done much earlier. Since you bring up the topic of public broadcasting entities needing to be sufficiently removed and protected from possible government or other domestic political interference and intervention, please entertain the following thoughts. NPR in the States has a Foundation and other mechanisms which give it autonomy (not to mention public funding). The BBC, overseen by the BBC Trust, is independent from direct government intervention. Not only is it required to be free from both political and commercial influence, but it answers only to its viewers and listeners. What's significant is how this differs from the Estonian Public Broadcasting setup. Five members of the the Estonian Public Broadcasting Council, which consists of nine members, are appointed by the most powerful Estonian political parties. Should this not be reconsidered? I do not doubt, knowing you to be a man who has strong feelings about the need for sound journalistic ethics, that the English section of EPB will stick to the highest professional standard, as you promise. To change the way in which the Council is constituted is not something within your power to do. Still - might it not serve the interests of the Estonian public if a mechanism were established for placing more distance between the EPB and the political parties? Who knows - perhaps the Estonian President might consider drawing attention to this need? What I actually want to say is: good luck! I want you to succeed. I'm sure you will. Be independent, be good, be bold.

Why just English? ERR should also have news in other major European languages such as French and German.

Strange, I commented yesterday, but cannot see my comment published. Anything wrong with it?

Great! THere are many young Estonians who don't speak, read, or write Estonia living outside of Estonia who would like to hear anything about Estonia in English. My own children, for example. We lived far from any Esto community, but they are interested .

Sounds great. I see it as a step further in the de-Russification of our nation. Imposition of the Russian language was, of course, coerced and there are all too many "residents" of Estonia who still cling vehemently to that which was brought to our country at the barrel of a Kalashnikov. All the best, and much success with your endeavor. Erwin Pari

Well, I just crashed in here few days ago, but congratulation from me too. I think such a portal for common news (not only limited to business news) is what a lot of "expats" and other foreign persons are wating for a long time. I hope you will cope with the world's critical eye very well and wish you good luck and success, and hopefully this portal will also help to make the world understand better about the views from Estonian perspective and about what is going on here in Estonia what makes this country drive, in good and bad and that ERR is a helpfull hand to connect Estonia for a better with the world. Sincerey, Knut Albers

Really glad to see something like this online now. Find it really important that it’s not done by Estonians only, but by somebody who knows the country but has a sort of outside view to what’s happening. Pleasant to read proper journalism and the layout is a feast for my eyes. Good luck!
