Going onto the ice anywhere on Estonia's Lake Peipus is prohibited as of Saturday as warmer weather has caused the ice to become dangerously fragile.

Marek Klaus, senior superintendent of the Police and Border Guard's (PPA) South Prefecture, confirmed that ice conditions had deteriorated rapidly and border guards had had to help a number of ice fishers in distress to the shore over the past week, South Prefecture spokespeople said.

"Beginning Saturday, going onto the lake ice both by means of transport and by foot will be prohibited," Klaus said.
