Renovated Ugala Theatre opens doors to public
Ugala Theatre in Viljandi opened its doors to the public again on Saturday following 13 months of extensive renovation work.
The theater building, designed by Irina Raud, Kalju Luts and Inga Orav with an interior by Mait Summatavet, was originally ompleted in 1981. The same architects were involved in drafting the renovations to the building.
As the building is under the protection of heritage conservation status, the new theater looks exactly like it used to, only much roomier and more modern. Ugala Theatre was temporarily rehomed for a total of nearly two years during the renovation process.
Producer Lembit Peterson chose Pedro Calderón's "The Phantom Lady" as the renovated theater's opening production as, in Peterson's opinion, the issue of differentiating apparent from actuality remains timely even today, over 350 years after the play was written.
