Court to hear case of refugee who threatened to set wife on fire
The court hearing of Syrian refugee Samer Khtab, 27, who is accused of attacking his wife and threatening to set her on fire is to begin on Tuesday at Pärnu County Court's Haapsalu Courthouse.
The hearings are scheduled for May 16, 22 an 25. "The court hearing is to be heard via camera for the protection of the victim," a press officer at Pärnu County Court told BNS.
Khtab has already stood trial in the same case, in which it was agreed with the prosecutor on Dec. 30 that the defendant would be handed down a conditional prison sentence of one and two years.
The court was set to confirm the sentence in mid-January, however the prosecutor's office backed out of the deal, which is why the court will now hear the case. The defendant has remained in custody during the pretrial investigation.
On Nov. 12, in the course of a fight, Khtab taped together his wife's hands and hit her. He thereafter poured a flammable liquid on her and threatened to set her on fire. The woman notified the family's support person, who in turn notified the police about the incident.
According to initial information, the motive behind the defendant's action was jealousy.
