60K Without Power as Storm Passes Through
Sixty thousand people were without power as of 9:00 this morning as a result of St. Jude, the storm that has caused havoc across northern Europe.
The islands clocked the highest wind speeds - gusts of just shy of 120 kph - but Pärnu County, the most densely populated area affected, appeared to sustain the biggest infrastructure hit.
A total of 11,000 customers were without power in Pärnu County, followed by Saaremaa with 7,000.
A passenger train plowed into a downed tree on the Tallinn-Pärnu line (no injuries were reported among passengers) and Steffani, a popular pizza restaurant in central Pärnu caught on fire, though arson has not been ruled out in that case.
Southern Estonia and inland regions experienced stronger than expected wind gusts, and the Road Administration said roads in Põlva and Võru County were especially heavily littered with fallen debris.
Storm surge was highest in Pärnu, 134 cm above normal, but had started to recede as of 9:30.
