The Estonian Academy of Sciences has selected ten new members.
Vacancies were filled in astronomy (Enn Saar), mathematics (Eve Oja), energy technology (Enn Lust), computer science (Tarmo Uustalu), ecology (Martin Zobel), medicine (Eero Vasar), biotechnology (Andres Metsalu), psychology (Jüri Allik), history (Valter Lang) and art theory (Mart Kalm), with a position in chemistry remaining unfilled.
Candidates could be nominated by other academicians, governing bodies of Estonian universities, research councils of research institutions registered with the Ministry of Education and Research, scientific societies and associations and unions in the creative industries.
Asked by ERR radio to define the most acute current problems in Estonian science, Tarmo Uustalu cited lack of young PhD students and overt reliance on publications and references as a way of assessing quality of science, which has a suppressing effect on novel and more daring resesearch.
