Medieval Burial Ground Yields Interesting Find
The 800 year-old pagan burial ground at Maidla yielded the remains of two bodies and evidence of what archeologists say was careful re-burial after an ancient tomb raid.
The remains allegedly belong to women, because of a horseshoe brooch and few glass beads were found along the remains, reported Eesti Päevaleht.
Mati Mandel, the head archaeologist at Maidla, said digging work at the 2,000-square-meter burial ground began nearly 30 years ago. The decision to return to the burial ground and its surroundings for a second investigation came last year.
The western side of the burial ground turned up a site where two women were buried together: Bones were strewn in a disorderly fashion, most likely from a grave robbery performed during the same time period. According to Mandel, the burial of two women in a same grave is unusual.
