Prisoners Attempt to Commit Suicide
Two inmates in Tartu Prison attempted to commit suicide in seperate incidents last week. Guards managed to save both.
One inmate lost consciousness due to heavy blood loss after cutting his wrist with a shaving razor on January 24. Officials applied first aid and helped the man regain consciousness, after which an ambulance transported him to the hospital for an operation. The man was later relocated to a high-security ward.
On January 28, Tartu Prison guards caught another inmate attempting to hang himself with a bed sheet.
The Ministry of Justice also reported several incidences of disorderly conduct last week.
Estonia has five prisons. Tartu Prison has a maximum inmate capacity of 924.
