Unscheduled Russian Power-Down Limits Capacity in Baltics
The power transmission capacity between Estonia and Latvia is more limited than normal due to an uncoordinated maintenance shutdown of a 330-kilowatt power line in Russia.
The Russian power line is connected to another operated by Latvia's AST. The shutdown wasn't scheduled on the synchronized maintenance agenda used by Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus, a press release from Estonian operator Elering said.
Eleringi CEO Taavi Veskimägi said that the incident supports a need to de-synchronize the Baltic transmission system from Russia and connect it instead with those of EU member states. A similar incident took place in June.
The capacity restriction began on August 20 and officials have said it will conclude on August 26.
