Responding to media reports that they are rushing ahead with construction of the new building before fences are mended with neighbors, the Estonian Academy of Arts says they are only sealing up an archeological dig and shoring up the surrounding areas to avoid later problems.

The archeological dig, foundation excavation and building of a retaining wall are covered under two contracts that were awarded at public procurements to separate companies and are worth a total of about 1 million euros.

After Archimedes Foundation pulled out of its commitment to fund the new building in January, the Academy's leaders halted all work, but the supervisory board decided in February to continue performing existing third-party contracts, especially considering that Archimedes had made a prepayment last summer.

The Academy's CFO Andri Simo said, however, that only the segments in progress would be completed. "We won't launch installation of the wall before the DIstrict Court decision on whether provisional legal protection will be applied, which will become clear probably this week," he told uudised.err.ee.

Additional design documents would have to be filed and  public procurements held would have to be held before the basement level construction begins.
