More Lynx, Deer Receive GPS Tracking Devices

The Environmental Information Center has tagged an additional four lynx and four deer with GPS tracking devices as part of efforts to monitor the ecological relations between predator and prey.
The GPS trackers, placed around the necks of the animals this month, should help study the deer’s selection of habitat and how it is affected by the lynx, one its main predators, the center said in a release.
Estonia's deer population dropped sharply in 2010 due to extreme winter weather conditions. Prior to that, their numbers had been fluctuating considerably, the center said.
The center has been tracking and following a small number of deer and lynx since 2008. Its long-term studies are funded by the Environmental Investment Center and are conducted in cooperation with the University of Tartu and the University of Life Sciences.
