State insists on renaming over 600 bus stops
Estonian government wants to change the names of over 600 bus stops all around the country. The reason? To preserve the Estonian language and culture.
For instance, all names that are in the wrong case, include abbreviations, miss a space, are commercial or misleading, will have to be renamed, Eesti Päevaleht reported.
The staff of the Institute of the Estonian Language and the Võro Institute checked 14,000 bus stops (that is around 7,000 names) on behalf of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. 1,283 names proved problematic and about half of those need to be changed.
The changes serve to preserve local cultural heritage, as well as ensure that the names reflect current reality.
