Ligi: Major Concessions for Greece Out of the Question
Minister of Finance Jürgen Ligi, commenting on the Euro Group meeting he attended in Luxembourg on Thursday, said in an that Greece will not receive any major concessions on the terms set out in the European Stability Mechanism.
Greece's newly-elected government has pledged to meet the demands set by its foreign creditors - the International Monetary Fund, the nations of the European Union and the European Central Bank - but has also set its sights on renegotiating some bailout terms that are fuelling social tensions.
Ligi, however, does not see too much room for tweaking the terms.
"The major objective in the case of Greece is to reduce the debt and deficit level of the country,” he told ERR radio. He said that the country has shown progress, as the primary deficit has been reduced several times, but needs to go further.
According to Ligi, the next step in the process is to send representatives of the foreign creditors to Greece. “We are pushing them to redo their schedules and go there immediately,” Ligi said.
