Foreign Ministry Aids Georgia's Victims of Domestic Violence

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is allocating 55,000 euros in support of curbing sexual and domestic violence against Georgian women.
The donation is made through the United Nations Refugee Agency, which holds violence against women to be a widespread problem in Georgia, especially in its northwestern region of Abkhazia, where a large portion of residents are displaced persons waiting to return to their homes after the Russo-Georgian War of 2008.
"Our Georgian partners have expressed desire to work together in solving the problem," said Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, adding that Estonia has also participated in previous projects for aiding victims of domestic violence in Georgia.
The UN agency’s goal is to counsel 700 victims of abuse and launch over a dozen awareness campaigns by the end of 2012. The initial plan foresees providing legal services to approximately 190 victims and their families and shelter to at least 160.
