Plans for Embassy in Brazil, Honorary Consulate in Colombia
Minister of Foreign Affairs Urmas Paet met his Brazilian and Colombian counterparts in Santiago, Chile on Saturday and said that Estonia is planning to increase it’s diplomatic presence in the two nations.
Paet told Brazilian Foreign Minister Antonio Patriota that relations between the two nations have grown significantly closer and he soon hopes to open an embassy in Brazil, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday.
Brazil already has an embassy in Tallinn while Estonia has honorary consulates in three of Brazil’s regions.
“We would like to open investment protection treaty negotiations,” said Paet, commenting on the increasing interest of Estonian businessmen in Brazil.
Paet and Patriota also spoke about joint activities in advancing human rights in the world as both are currently members of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
In a meeting with Colombian Foreign Minister Maria Holguin Cuellar, Paet expressed a wish to find an honorary consul for Estonia in Columbia. “We are interested in increasing relations with Colombia on trade, services and investments,” said Paet, adding that Estonia supports Colombia’s entry into the OECD.
Paet was in Chile to attend the EU-CELAC summit.
