Estonia is known for having the world's lowest ratio of men to women, and its capital outdoes the national average, according to data published in the freshly-released Tallinn statistical yearbook.

As of January 1, Tallinn was home to 230,154 women and just 185,990 men. That puts the sex ratio at just under 0.81. The national average is 0.84, according to the 2012 World Factbook - the lowest number for any country with the possible exception of some Pacific atolls and micro-states (Only Latvia and Lithuania are even close.)

Mustamäe, the second-largest district of Tallinn by population with 64,237 people, had a particularly low ratio, 0.75.

Lasnamäe was the most populous district, with 116,273 people, and the smallest is Pirita, home to around 16,600.

I can hear the stampede of English losers already. Thanks for publishing this.

Now all the foreign losers who can't get women in their home countries are going to congregate to Tallinn like cannabis enthusiasts to Amsterdam.

I believe the previous posters aren't giving the women of Estonia much credit. Firstly, many of the English guys that are here stay in groups and are drunk a lot of the time - hardly attractive for females to start off with. Also, most Estonian women would be aware how little it costs to get here via Ryan Air, and it only takes a few minutes observation of these bachelor groups to make an assessment of their general level of intelligence and appropriateness as a partner. I think it's more likely that many local women 'settle' for a less-than-ideal Estonian partner. In fact, and although it's only anecdotal evidence, I know a number of couples like this; well-educated, attractive female with a less-well-educated, less attractive (and, sad to say, often hard-drinking) partner. The exceptions to this seem to be occurring more in the younger couples where there is a often a better 'match', and the guys seem to be better educated.

The "English losers" looking for "fresh meat" in Tallinn do not have much from this (or not much to worry about, depending from which angle you may look at it). The ratio discrepancy looks quite differently for the younger generations and rise exponentially with age. Sadly, the number of children without parental care in need of assistance, increased from 1,529 to 2,573 just within the last five years (2007-2011) almost constantly (and boys are more often affected in compare to girls). Interestingly (and contrary to the official national statistics), the person that were unemployed during a year, increased in Tallinn from 36,555 to 122,117 at the same time frame (2007-2011). There are a lot more of interesting figures in this stat (google for "Tallinn Statistical Yearbook 2012 Slideshare").

Some very bitter and insecure commenters today methinks.

I do not believe that many foreigner will "congregate" because of the surplus of women in Tallinn. The surplus is mainly due to the fact that Estonian men die rater young and the women live longer. I do not think that this foreigner is interested in women between 60-80 years old.

Rather than creeps coming to Tallinn, the trend is now the other way: 60- to 80-year-old Mustamäe cougars on the prowl. Coming to a European capital near you....

I agree with K.A. and Auslane - the standard of Estonian men is so low that no wonder they're afraid of a few drunk 'English' (like there aren't other nationalities who come here in droves) losers, who tend to only be here a few days, coming here.

I am disappointed that EER's moderator allows comments about 'English losers' and suchlike. Is this really the place to vent national prejudices?

And what about the comment about Mustamäe cougars. Some of those might be people's grandmothers. I'm offended!

The implications are for population growth and society's development. For example, at Tartu University it's currently 70% female. Now let's say those females want to marry a man who also has a university education, which is not a lot to ask. Just at the start, the numbers are stacked against women -- it's 4 women competing for 2 men. This doesn't bode well for the birth rate, and the children that are born are more likely to grow up in single-mother households. Generally, children are better growing up in a two-parent household and also two-parent households are usually two-income households leading to a higher standard of living. They're having the same problem, though in the opposite direction, in India and China due to preferences for boys and the one-child policy (China).

@Max - If the shoe fits. From first-hand observation of the behaviour of English, Finnish etc bachelor / party groups over a number of months in the Old Town, there is a noticeable proportion of 'losers' among them. In fact, every single person I've seen urinating in Suur-Karja street during the daytime (some 5-6 over the same number of months) has been English. Respectable men simply don't do this, nor do they get so drunk that this seems like a good idea in the first place. I think the user of the word 'loser' is actually somewhat generous in these circumstances.

My comment was more of a joke than anything else (sorry if anybody was offended), so no need for all you English fellows to jump on the defensive, you'll notice I didn't say anything about any specific nationality in my initial comment regardless. Anyway, I think Dudde's comment is on the money.

Some of these comments are rather surprising much like the Finnish generalisation of Estonians being thieves and con men.

Any place is good for displaying douchebaggery, Max. Take it as a friendly reminder of the world we live in. I personally respect Estonian men a lot (they chop trees down and can fix stuff). It is true Estonian women complain they are a bit spoiled by this stat though.
