Estonian Biathlete Becomes World Youth Champion

Eighteen-year-old Estonian skier Grete Gaim took the gold medal in the women's pursuit at the International Biathlon Union's Youth and Junior World Championships in Kontiolahti, Finland on February 26. 

Gaim took the highest position on the pedestal after finishing the 7.5-kilometer course with a time of 27:18.1. She started the race in 10th position, a spot she had secured in a prior six-kilometer sprint. 

The silver medal went to Julia Ransom of Canada, who lost to Gaim by 6.8 seconds. Germany's Annika Knoll came in 17.5 seconds behind the winner to take third. 

Gaim demonstrated a steady hand throughout the race, missing only one target on the third lap of the race, sport.err.ee reported. Ransom missed two targets in the final, fourth lap. 

Johanna Talihärm, another young Estonian skier participating in the race, took 25th place after missing six targets. She lost to Gaim by 2:50.6.
