Supreme Court rejects Statoil's alcohol ban complaint
The Supreme Court said it will not process a request by fuel and retail company Statoil to rule on Tallinn City Council's ban on the sale of strong alcohol in petrol stations.
The company said the ban is unconstitutional as it infringes on the freedom of enterprise clause, citing previous Supreme Court rulings that have deemed similar bans illegal.
The ban is due to come into effect on July 1.
The ban on selling strong alcohol in petrol stations is only one side of Tallinn's long crusade to curb alcohol consumption. A total ban on alcohol sales on Sundays in Tallinn is due to begin on March 8.
Two companies have challenged the Sunday ban and Tallinn City Council is due to discuss a possible postponement today.
