Heritage Site to Be Partially Turned to Dust
Tallinn decided today to start preparations on the partial demolition of the Trepi street heritage site.
Located at the foot of St. Nicholas Church in Tallinn's Old Town, the historical street is part of a UNESCO World Heritage site.
An archeological study released in 2006 discovered that part of an ancient wall was still intact on the property, and the city decided to restore it and put it on display, citing special national heritage circumstances.
But the property's owner did not give its support for the city's restoration. The case was taken on by the courts and the Supreme Court ruled against the city in November.
Deputy Mayor Mihhail Kõlvart said today at a Tallinn city government press conference that roughly 35 square meters of the wall will be demolished.
Calling the decision “all but reasonable,” Kõlvart said the city will respect the Supreme Court's decision.
“If the owner wishes that a pile of sand be on his land, the decision must be respected. This will be carried out aesthetically and the bigger part of the wall and gate will stay intact,” said Kõlvart.
