France awards Legion of Honour to Estonian actor, theater director Rein Oja
France has awarded the distinction of Knight of the Legion of Honour to Estonian actor and General Director of the Estonian Drama Theatre Rein Oja.
French Ambassador Michel Raineri is to to present the Legion of Honour, Knight's grade, to Oja on Thursday in recognition of his services to cultural cooperation between France and Estonia, the French Embassy reported.
The National Order of the Legion of Honour, also known as simply the Legion of Honour, is the highest French order for military and civil merits. Established by Napoleon Bonaparte, the Legion of Honour, which is divided into five degrees of distinction, has been awarded to a total of over 94,000 individuals since 1803.
Previous Estonian recipients of the Legion of Honour include Estonian Presidents Toomas Hendrik Ilves and Lennart Meri, former EU Commissioner Siim Kallas, Commander-in-Chief of the Estonian Defence Forces Lt. Gen. Riho Terras, writer Jaan Kross, MP Enn Eesmaa and composer Arvo Pärt.
