Contemporary Art Prize Goes to Kasearu
The Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia awarded its second Köler Prize to artist Flo Kasearu, for her "artistic intervention in the urban space."
"She was perhaps the most complicated but also the most emotional choice," said Tõnis Saadoja, a judge in the contest. "She was also younger and more open, the rawest and most promising."
Besides impressing the panel of judges, Kasearu also won the public voting round, ETV reported.
Kasearu's new work was entitled We Are On the Way, a video installation that depicted a fire truck driving at a slow speed through the streets of a town, never getting to its destination. Kasearu was born in 1985.
Marge Monko received honorable mention for her coherence and mature approach to hot-button social topics.
Each of the five nominees entered two works, one a previously exhibited one, the other new.
The first Köler Prize, named after 19th century artist Johann Köler, the first Estonian painter with an art academy education, was awarded last year to Sergei Zolotko. There is a 5,000-euro cash prize associated with it. All of the nominees exhibit their works at a joint exhibition.
The exhibition of nominees will run for two more weeks.
