Mysterious Ancient Arrowhead Dug Up in Saaremaa
A crossbow arrowhead discovered in archeological excavations at Saaremaa's Kuressaare Castle is unique in the world.
Arrowheads thus far found in Estonia are very different. One attribute that makes the find rare is that it is attached to a thin piece of metal that was used to fit the arrowhead into a cavity in the shaft. Conversely, most Estonian arrowheads have holes into which the shaft was fitted, reported Saarte Hääl.
The surface of the arrowhead, which was found in Kuressaare Castle courtyard, is also decorated by a small rectangular marking that forms a cross.
But archaeologists were most excited about the arrowhead's ornamental brass collar.
Upon researching the item, a senior archaeologist at the University of Tartu, Ain Mäesalu, identified a similar arrowhead that was discovered in Pécs, Hungary.
