Girl Corps Celebrates 80th Anniversary
The Girls Corps is celebrating its 80th birthday today with events held across Estonia.
Established in 1932, during the first Republic of Estonia, the organization known in Estonian as Kodutütred aimed to increase patriotism among young girls. The group was shut down after the Soviet occupation of 1940, but was later restored in 1991.
Celebrations for the jubilee will take place throughout the year. An awards ceremony will be held next week at the National Opera. In March, a traveling exhibit depicting the history and achievements of the organization will start a 15-month tour. In May, the organization will host its general assembly meeting, which takes place every five years.
