Parade Offers Plethora of Activities for the Two-Wheeled
Tallinn's culture program will host a bicycle parade this weekend, as the culmination of a week dedicated to bikes.
"Bicycles are getting more and more popular," said Hando Jaksi, an event organizer. "On the the outskirts of Tallinn, new bicycle roads are being built constantly and traffic education takes place. Unfortunately in the town center we don't see many cyclists and cycling is considered dangerous," he added.
He said the parade aimed to change that, by raising the profile of cyclists and promote changes in attitudes and traffic flows to make it safer.
The parade will take place on June 5 from 12:00 to 13:00. Motorized traffic will be stopped on the route from Freedom Square over Pärnu maantee and Mere puiestee toward Linnahall. Registration starts at Freedom Square at 10 am.
The parade will conclude at the Linnahall parking lot, where a bicycle market will be set up. The program will continue with a concert to celebrate the newly opened Culture Kilometer – a promenade starting from the capital's cruise liner terminals, passing the former Patarei prison and an old seaplane harbor, and ending up in Kalamaja Park.
Visitors can visit seaside cafes, the fish market, "Eco-Island," the Contemporary Art Museum, the Estonian Design House, and an old prison. Adventurous cyclists can head to a secret cinema venue - bikes serve as an entry ticket.
