Dali Exhibit Opens in Pärnu
Original works by the great Spanish surrealist Salvador Dali are on display in Estonia for the first time.
The works, exhibited at the Pärnu Museum of New Art, come from private collections and were brought to Estonia in cooperation with the French art society Sarl Amiencom. The exhibition, entitled "Materialization of the surreal," is open from September 5 to October 7, ETV reported.
The artist, sculptor, filmmaker and writer Dali was best known for his large-scale paintings, but the Pärnu exhibit focuses on smaller works.
"His illustrations on medieval themes, his work with silver, gold, bronze and ceramics is less well known,“ said the museum's director, Mark Soosaar.
The exhibit includes three colorful lithography series, one based on the early 20th century novel and ballet "Three-Cornered Hat,“ the second depicting the 12 Apostles, and the third is dedicated to Italian artist Benvenuto Cellini. There is also a ceramic plate series called "The Seven Arts" and another five-plate series showing playing cards.
Soosaar recalled his first impressions of the work of Dali, during the 1960s in Moscow.
"At the film institute we were shown Dali's and Louis Bunuel's joint film "An Andalusian Dog." That was the beginning of intense depictions of dreams and the real world on cinema screens,“ Soosaar said, adding that the film would also be screened at the exhibit.
