This week's recommendations take you behind the scenes at the national opera, to the island of Hiiumaa for an exhibition of contemporary photographic art, to a nature film festival, concerts, and a screening of Marina Abramović's "The Space in Between".

Credo International Festival of Orthodox Sacred Music

The Credo festival has taken place in Estonia since 1994 and since then become an important music event in its genre every September.


14th Matsalu Nature Film Festival MAFF

The MAFF festival showcases a variety of new international films about nature, wildlife, adventures, expeditions, the environment, sustainability, biodiversity, and conservation — films about nature in its diversity, and about the coexistence of man and nature.

Symbiosis 3 contemporary jewellery exhibition

Lihula Manor, Lihula, Lääne County

At the exhibition 19 jewellery artists are presenting their work, which pays homage to nature. Symbiosis is a different kind of exhibition format, offering surprises and joy of discovery in a unique way every time.

Kanuti Gildi Saal: Vertikaalstart

Kanuti Gildi Saal starts its 16th season with the opening event Vertikaalstart (“vertical take-off”). The new season is introduced together with the artists, residents, and guests, who will shed some light to the ideas that will keep them busy during the upcoming season at Kanuti Gildi Saal.

AniMatsuri Japanese Pop Culture Festival

AniMatsuri is a Japanese pop culture festival held for the tenth time and intended mainly for youngsters. Visit and hear interesting lectures, participate in exciting competitions, workshops, martial arts demonstrations, and much more.

Guided tour of the Estonian National Opera

If you’d like to get a peek behind the scenes at some of the many facilities the Opera House has to offer, and learn what goes on behind the closed doors before the curtain rises, this one-hour guided tour is for you.

Exhibition “Wild Aesthetics” by Peeter Laurits

Nelja Nurga Gallery, Kärdla, Hiiumaa island

The exhibition in collaboration with Vaal Gallery presents works of photo artist Peeter Laurits from various periods of his career. The spectator can observe how the artist varies the photographic tools of expression, looks for the limits of the medium and its technical means, and focuses on deciphering the mystical-mythical codes that are manifest in nature.

Urban barley field and harvest feast
Sept. 23
Valge Street, Tallinn

Earlier this year, two young designers planted a barley field on the unused stairs leading to the median strip of Lasnamäe’s city expressway. Now it’s time to harvest. Barley was actually the earliest crop grown in Estonia, with evidence for it found in archaeological digs just in that area.
