Documentary evening #20: “Janis: Little Girl Blue”

Sõprus Movie Theater, Tallinn

This is Amy Berg’s heartwarming documentary about blues queen Janis Joplin, who is a part of the so-called 27 Club, a gang of rare talents who died at the age of 27. The film consists of conversations with Janis’s loved ones and colorful archive materials — as colorful as she was.

Ruja’s forbidden concert: Rein Rannap, rock band, Kristjan Kannukene

Viinistu Art Museum, Viinistu, Harju County

Time to take a trip down Estonian memory lane. This concert symbolically represents one of Ruja’s many forbidden concerts from the beginning of 1970s. All of the music was composed made by Rein Rannap and the texts were from one of the most legendary Estonian poets, Juhan Viiding, also known by the pseudonym Jüri Üdi. While a large part of those songs have been recorded at least once in some form and are available to listeners today, many songs will be heard for the first time in more than 40 years at this concert.

Tuesday, Aug. 9 - Saturday, Aug. 13

XX Wood Days “Varbola Wood”

Linnamägi Hill, Varbola, Rapla County

The audience can see wood sculptures being made before their very eyes, so everyone who loves the art of wood carving is very welcome there. Oh, and bring a picnic basket.

Thursday, Aug. 11 - Sunday, Aug. 14

Haanjamaa’s Smoke Sauna Week

Haanja region, Võru County

We Estonians sure respect our sauna traditions, and here is a good example of this respect. During various Smoke Sauna Week activities, farm families will share both sauna experiences as well as know-how including smoke sauna-related customs, beliefs and rituals with the visitors.

A more detailed English-language program can be found here.

Friday, Aug. 12 - Saturday, Aug. 13

Opinion Festival 2016

Vallimägi Hill, Paide, Järva County

Nowadays it seems to be almost mandatory to have an opinion on everything, and when you think about it, that is not a bad thing. The festival includes many themes to which to think along. This year’s Opinion Festival will host more English-language discussion forums than ever before in the event’s four-year history.

Friday, Aug. 12 - Sunday, Aug. 14

Viru Folk 2016

Käsmu, Lääne-Viru County

This year, the highlight is on music from Nordic islands. There will be performances from Iceland, Faroe Islands, Shetland Islands, Åland, Gotland and, naturally, Estonian islands. The festival people told us that every festival-goer must surely also take the time to visit Devil’s Island. They wouldn't say why, but told us that it will become clear in Käsmu in August!

Saturday, Aug. 13

Street Festival “Augustiunetus”. Night of Arts in Pärnu

Pärnu

During summer, Pärnu is filled with domestic and international visitors, leaving the locals a bit neglected. So this is how their third objective came to be — to bring more focus on the people who live in Pärnu and to demonstrate the amazing variety of arts created there.

Lestafest 2016
Kõrgessaare, Hiiumaa

This fish party is for everyone who loves to buy and eat fish as well as hear about fishing traditions. This fishful event will be taking place in Hiiumaa's Kõrgessaare Harbor for the fifth time.

Saturday, Aug. 13 - Sunday, Aug. 21

Birgitta Festival 2016

Pirita Convent, Tallinn

Their staged oratorios have become the festival’s own particular genre. The program also includes operas, ballets, contemporary dance and musical comedy productions.
