Number of museum visits sets new record
In anticipation of Saturday's Night of Museums, Statistics Estonia has released its latest museum attendance numbers. According to the data, there were 3.8 million museum visits in Estonia in 2014, which is 15 percent more than the year before.
In 2014, there were 2,919 museum visits per 1,000 inhabitants in Estonia, which is the highest figure known in Europe according to Egmus.eu, ahead of Norway (2,142 visits), Sweden (1,920) and Slovenia (1,727).
In 2014, there were 256 active museums in Estonia, 83 of which were local lore museums, 45 history and archaeology museums, 20 art museums, 6 ethnography and anthropology museums, 3 natural history museums and 99 other museums. Althogether they employed 1,867 people and had 486 volunteers in 2014.
Statistics Estonia also reports that people spent 9.2 euros on average when visiting a museum, art exhibition or a cultural site (including transport, food, drinks). The total expenditure of the visitors is nearly 28.5 million euros per year.
