“The committee could have easily chosen 10 or even 20 writers, but we hope to get there in a few years, the first step has been taken,” Karl Martin Sinijärv, head of the Estonian Writers' Union, said.
“Writers generally have a very good idea of what they are going to write over the next few years, so it wasn't a difficult choice to make. If the salary helps the works they are thinking of materialize, it's very good,” Sinijärv explained.
The choice of writers was made by a seven member committee.
In October, the Ministry of Culture launched the project that sees carefully selected writers and artists paid a salary for three years, so they could focus on their work and not worry about how to make ends meet. Unlike grants, a salary offers recipients social guarantees.
The ministry has allocated 160,000 euros for the project from next year's budget.
