Ethno Experts in Tartu Examine Globalization of Culture
In Tartu this week, 430 scholars from 41 countries will gather for a five-day congress held by the International Society for Ethnology and Folklore.
Workshops, films, book presentations and lectures at the event will focus on globalization and culture, reported ERR radio. Experts will be given a tour of the National Museum as well as the Seto region.
Subthemes include cultural transmission, relationships between new media technologies, collective creativity, imaginations related to migration and cultural protection.
"Topical issues of the modern day are definitely migration, the social movement of people in a single cultural space, but also between different cultures, continents and economic regions. These are issues that affect all of us,” said Kristin Kuutmaa, a professor of culture at the University of Tartu and the head organizer of the event.
"Ethnologists and folklorists bring examples from the past and previous experiences as lessons, and through analyzing these we can understand how to approach problems in today's society.”
