Feature film “The Fencer” awarded best Finnish film
The Finnish-German-Estonian co-produced feature film “The Fencer”, already a Golden Globe nominee in the Best Foreign Language Film category, won “Jussi” awards in the Best Film and Best Cinematography categories in Helsinki on Saturday night.
In addition to the two “Jussi” wins, Märt Avandi was also nominated for Best Leading Actor, marking the first time an Estonian actor has ever been nominated for a “Jussi”.
“The Best Film ‘Jussi’ is the most important film award in Finland, so it is remarkable that such recognition was awarded to an Estonian-language and Estonian-minded film!” said Ivo Felt, the film’s Estonian producer.
"The Fencer" was one of 39 feature-length films premiered in Finland last year.
Finland’s official film award “Jussi” has been awarded continuously by Filmiaura, an association consisting of approximately 260 film industry professionals, since 1944, making it the oldest film award in Europe.
