Elmo Nüganen awarded Baltic Star in St. Petersburg
Estonian actor and director Elmo Nüganen was presented with the International Baltic Star Award for the development and consolidation of humanitarian links in the Baltic region. Nüganen received the award at a ceremony in the Hermitage Theatre in St. Petersburg, Russia, on Oct. 3.
The Baltic Star Awards ceremony has taken place every year since 2004 as part of the Baltic House Festival held every year in October.
2016 being the Year of Film in Russia, the list of recipients of the award this year included several prominent actors and directors, including Russian director, producer, and screenwriter Andrei Konchalovsky as well as Latvian actor Ivars Kalniņš. This year’s Memory Award went to late Russian director Aleksey Balabanov.
The film “1944,” directed by Elmo Nüganen, was screened as part of the Baltic House Festival on Oct. 4.
Previous Estonian recipients of the Baltic Star award include composer Arvo Pärt, conductor Eri Klas, conductor Aivar Mäe, singer Georg Ots, and actor Lembit Ulfsak.
The Baltic Star Award is given to culture and art personalities, academics, officials, and businesspeople for outstanding merits in the development of cultural relations among the countries of the Baltic Sea region.
